Ichiban Kuji is a Japanese lottery raffle. You purchase a ticket, and are guaranteed to win one of the various prizes exclusive to that lottery. The largest prizes often include exclusive plush or figures, with the lesser prizes being things like keychains, towels, mugs, etc.
This Ichiban Kuji featured not one but two Mew plush! The "B" Prize is a sleepy Mew plush, and the "G" Prize is a small smiling Mew mascot.
This is such a cute collection including plushies, travel bags, towels and more. This particular Mew was part of the "Last One" prize which is extra special. The person to buy the very last ticket for the lottery got a plush set of Pikachu, Mew and a little sleeping bag as an extra prize. I only have the Mew by itself, but I'd love to track down the complete set next time we visit Japan!
A very old prize plush from back when companies used white for Mew's fur instead of pink. This is a weird looking little plush, with a kinked tail that angles down instead of up. It kind of looks like a fetus 😅
I've found this plush in a variety of sizes and materials-- I have no idea how many different versions exist. I've never been able to find one with a hang tag, so I don't know too much about them. I'm on the hunt to collect them all!
An adorable Advanced Generation-era prize plush. The Mew designs from this era are seriously the best! I especially like this one because it has a slightly darker pink fur., as well as a really cute shape.
Here's an extra cute prize plush released in 2005. "Yawaraka" means "soft", and this series features a nubbly terry-cloth type fabric. This plush is one of my favorites!
Another "Yawaraka" plush with soft terry-cloth fabric. This one is much larger.
A Kuttari style plush from the Advanced Generation era.
The coloring and style is similar to the "Kawaii" series plush, but bigger! Mine is missing the hang tag, which was a cardboard strip along the top of the head.
There were several arcade plushies released for the Lucario and the Mystery of Mew movie. Since this movie came out in 2005 and I wasn't collecting plush yet, I have to hunt for them second-hand.
An extra cute Mew holding an umbrella for Spring. I don't see this plush too often, so I was happy to get one with a hang tag!
Banpresto made a lot of plushies in this series starting in 2016. The tags and marketing have a pretty, delicate vibe. Some of the Mews in this series look similar so it's hard to keep track of them all! They feel higher quality than other arcade prizes-- the fabric is closer to minky vs. the usual velboa.
"Mikke" translates roughly to "found you!" as in hide-and-seek, so this series features pokemon hiding in socks. They're very cute. Imagine collecting them all and decorating a Christmas tree! Mew isn't removable from this one, unlike the Tomy stocking Mew I have.
This line focuses on pokemon with variants, like regional or male/female Pokemon. There are two Mews in this series., but I'm not sure why because Mew doesn't have a variant! I guess it never hurts to add a Mew? I just have the sitting version so far. Maybe the variant is that the other one is "flying"?
These plushies were released as merch for the Mewtwo Strikes Back - Evolution movie. They're similar to the I love Mew plush, but they aren't as soft and are a bit less cutesy. They're good plush for displaying! I won some of these myself through Toreba, and purchased some secondhand.
This line is known as "Roly Poly" in English. You can see why-- the pluch are super round with big heads! I don't love this Mew, but I won it myself on Toreba which makes it special either way.
Kutsurogi Time translates to "Relaxation Time", and this was released along with a very cute resting Dragonite plush. It has an unusual nubbly fabric, almost like terrycloth but hairier if that makes sense? Unfortunately, this material seems to collect dirt extremely easily, so its underside and feet are a little discolored. I'm not sure how to clean it without ruining the fabric. 😞
The Hopepita series features plush in a hugging pose and a winking expression. They can be arranged to look like they're hugging whatever you set them against!
This line translates to "Look at the tail!" and (obviously) features Pokemon showing off their tails. Three Mew versions have been released, which are basically the same pose in three different sizes. So far, I just have the small one.
Play-by-Play has an odd history. I've heard that they initially made Pokémon plush for retail stores, but pivoted to the carnival/prize market after poor sales. I'm not sure if that's true, but considering how wonky these plush are, I wouldn't be surprised. Back in the 90s, licensing was looser and there wasn't as much art for companies to reference, so Play-by-Play seemingly decided to wing it with some of their designs. I'm truly not sure if there were multiple Mew patterns, or if the quality control was just so bad that they all came out looking different. I find these guys charmingly ugly, so I do hope to collect all the sizes!
Is this meant to be a different Mew? Or did someone put its eyes on crooked? We'll never know.
This Mew was listed as being 18" on Mercari, so I was surprised to see a tiny 10" guy in the package when it arrived. It turned out that the seller made a typo, and when I was preparing to return it she insisted I keep it as a holiday gift. That made my day, and now this plush enjoys a prominent spot in my collection ❤️
This giant Mew was obviously a carnival prize-- it's full of styrofoam beads instead of plush filling. I was really excited to add this big version to my collection! I think it might be the largest size of Play by Play Mew, but I'm not positive. I included the 10" version as a size comparison.
